Nail Psoriasis Treatment Cure

Psoriasis is a skin disease that affects many people. It is characterized by red, inflamed patches of skin on the body. These patches can be very itchy and painful, and usually affect the elbows, knees, hands, feet, and face. This disease can also affect a person’s finger nails and toe nails. When this happens, the disease is called psoriatic nail dystrophy.

About 25 to 50 percent of patients suffering from psoriasis experience nail psoriasis. Although scientists have not determined the cause of nail psoriasis, studies have shown that the disease is usually genetic. If a patient’s mother or father suffer from psoriasis, the patient is much more likely to develop this disease as well. Many people who suffer from this disease also suffer from a decrease in their quality of life because they are embarrassed and self-conscientious, especially when suffering from a particularly severe breakout.

Nail Psoriasis Treatment

Currently, there is no cure for nail psoriasis. The goal of any treatment for this disease is aimed towards improving the appearance of the affected person’s nails, thus improving their self-confidence. Many people with this ailment discover that their nail has loosened. If this has happened, it is important to trim the nail back to where it is still attached to the skin. This helps any medication to work better. Patients who perform nail care at home must always be sure to be very gentle when handling their nails as rough treatment can lead to severe psoriasis breakouts.

As mentioned above, a patient’s doctor may prescribe medication to help treat the symptoms of nail psoriasis. Most of these treatments will come in the form of an ointment or cream. These include steroid creams, creams containing Vitamin D, and antifungal creams. Usually, these treatments will need to be rubbed on and around the nail multiple times per day.

These medications may not be effective in all cases, as the actual nail presents a barrier to the skin underneath. It is sometimes difficult for the prescribed medication to reach the skin because of this. In such cases, a medical professional will often resort to injecting the necessary medication under the nail so that it can work properly.

In some cases, none of the above treatments are effective in treating nail psoriasis. In these cases, the patient’s nails often must be surgically removed. During this procedure, the nail area is numbed using a local anesthetic and the nails are removed. Removing the affected nails will cause the symptoms of nail psoriasis to dissipate.
