How Common Is Psoriasis?

Posted on January 30th, 2010

How Common Is Psoriasis? – Answer 1

Somewhere in the range of 2-4% of the world population is the figure usually given for number of Psoriasis patients. The Brit Psoriasis Association says 2-3 % of the British population suffers from Psoriasis.

May not sound like much but that 2-3% means about 7 million people here in the US alone.

Don’t know if my GP’s trying to tell me something, but 6 months ago, I went to him with ‘spots’ that started in the armpits and went down the inside of my arms and the sides of my torso. He said “all I seem to be seeing at the moment is non-specific skin conditions” (or words to that effect).

Well in fairness to him, he is a GP and that’s not a very usual pattern for Psoriasis to begin to appear like that -much more common to begin on the scalp or elbow/knee joints. So what he said isn’t really unreasonable.

Some weeks later, dermo say “me see you in 5 months” Me wonder “surely my GP must have heard of something called a NHS waiting-list, why didn’t he work on the assumption that I’ve got psoriasis, after all – he is my doctor (duh !)”

Might not have known it and he did try what sounds like a topical steroid which is a pretty common thing to try for Psoriasis along with other types of skin irritations.

Anyway, upshot – I write GP (alleged) to say “please assume I have psoriasis, me want prescription – this thing ain’t stopping for nobody”. Me now picking up prescription (chemists) tomorrow morning. Now maybe I’m just being sensitive, but I’m having such a hard time trying to delude myself that he’s never seen a case of psoriasis before. I know it’s probably just paranoia getting the better of me – and he must see a million different kinds of related things – but even then…… . Someone please tell me to get a grip of myself and stop being so paranoid. And the likelihood of a cure.

The thing is that there are other things that can look similar, especially to a non-specialist and as I said above, yours didn’t appear in a usual pattern for P. Not impossible, just not usual. And he did give you something that sounds like the topical steroid (couldn’t find daktorcote anywhere BTW. sure about that name?) that would be a common initial approach for P and a number of similar looking things.

So yeah, it’s really frustrating but it doesn’t sound like conspiracy theory territory.

How Common Is Psoriasis? – Answer 2

I personally have no faith in GP’s knowledge of psoriasis, my GP spent a year treating me for psoriasis under the false assumption that it was a yeast infection that had somehow spread to my scalp in addition to my private parts.

I’ve seen a LOT of dermatologists, I usually “dump” the ones that look/talk/act like they’re clueless about it. I’m really not afraid of dermatologist-jumping, suggest that you find a better dermatologist (I usually dump the ones that look at my psoriasis with disgust.)

I’d really suggest signing up to receive the NPF bulletins. I’ve really learnt a lot from them, now I go to my dermatologist and tell her exactly which medicines I need!!

Have I Got Psoriasis? Psoriasis Pictures Website

Posted on January 30th, 2010

The little I have read about Psoriasis. (mostly the blurb from Miralex ie. genetic, knees, elbows, groin, scalp, etc.) tends to make me think that I have psoriasis. But it is a ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ thing and I’ve been to my doctor and dermatologist to be told it is eczema (Psoriasis).

They of course prescribed ointments (talk $$$) with some kind of hydracortazone or other. Well, I hated the way the stuff felt on the skin and the grease spots left behind, so being the lazy soandso that I am I’ve not gotten any more nor have I applied any for months. Anyways, making short story shorter…any websites with Psoriasis pictures?

Your dermatologist should be able to tell you definitively if it is psoriasis or eczema, so maybe you’re lucky and do not have psoriasis. However, here are two sites with photos: http://www.psoriasis.org/ (Natl Psoriasis Foundation)

Topical Steroids Psoriasis

Yeah there is a site with Psoriasis pictures or too – one I found referenced to in a request to fill out a survey a couple of days ago at this ng. If you click on the link you’ll find an encyclopaedia with lots of pictures etc. Good luck – for your sake I hope it isn’t Psoriasis.

Psoriasis or Hair Dandruff – How to Differentiate ?

Posted on January 30th, 2010

Sometimes it is really hard to make out the difference between Psoriasis and Dandruff. Let us see what people say about it.

Answers to How to Differentiate between Psoriasis and Hair Dandruff

Consult a Dermatologist. The right person to answer this question is the Dermatologist.

I am going through the same thing. not on my scalp but the trunk of my body. my primary doctor says psoriasis and then i got a biopsy then they said it is general eczema (sp) and they gave me a lot of things. it seems to come out more in winter. sunlight helps a lot. but it is nerves i believe. in any case, i should post a picture to show you how bad it is for me and i can not get anyone to diagnose it for me. frustrating

If it is on your scalp tar shampoo or zinc would help. mine is on the trunk of my body and it makes it worse.

Your doctor should be able to tell. If not, a dermatologist can. During Winter it isn`t uncommon for our skin and scalp to be dry. You might want to limit how long you shower and how hot the water is.

Try using a dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders and see what happens. As strange as it may seem, most people with dandruff have oily skin and scalp, not dry skin.

Seborrheic Dermatitis Dandruff

I just though about this when i read something about it… I have always had severe dandruff, and I just didn’t know if there was an easy way to tell if I have something other than dandruff..

I have been using netrugenio t-gel for years and years… I just tryed a shampoo that has sylic acid in it i think… It seemed to work a little better, but not a lot…

Pustular Psoriasis Symptoms

Posted on January 30th, 2010

Hi!

I am so thankful to have found this site and looking forward to learning from all of you!

My 7 year old daughter has been diagnosed with pustular psoriasis – affecting just one foot. She regularly breaks out with liquid-filled bubbles that itch like the dickens! Then they rupture and crust over and dry out, leaving the foot scaly.

The 2 MD’s we have visited are telling me she needs to be on steroids (NO!) and have given me a prescription for a topical liquid called Drysol that burns terribly when applied. I am told there is nothing preventative that can be done unless I am willing to put her on steroids indefinitely…

I have not been successful in finding anything that can help her – nor do I understand this disease and what causes it. We routinely use more holistic treatments, but I am at a loss here in finding information on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Pustular Psoriasis Symptoms – Answer

Psoriasis is a challenging disorder but if you are willing to investigate the different therapies and search out a qualified doctor, you _can_ get it under control. Most likely you will have to investigate and alternate between therapies, with an eye to finding those that are effective and that have minimal side effects.

I suggest you start by checking the National Psoriasis Foundation’s Psoriasis website
