Posted on February 9th, 2010

We have all heard of psoriasis, but we probably didn’t know there was more than one form of it. Psoriasis is a skin condition that is very distinct. If you have one form of psoriasis, another form will usually replace it, as the first form disappears. This is often brought on by a trigger or stimulant. There are many Guttate Psoriasis Treatments or Cure for Guttate Psoriasis.

Guttate psoriasis is identifiable by its red tear-shaped small spots that appear on the trunk and the arms and legs. Guttate is a Latin word meaning drop. This form of psoriasis is not very common and it can happen quite quickly. Strep throat may be one of the triggers along with tonsillitis, stress and certain medications. Sunburn and alcohol are also possible triggers. Guttate psoriasis is usually treated in people younger than 30, however, anyone is vulnerable. It is not contagious. This form of psoriasis is believed to be an inherited condition. Guttate psoriasis may be more severe in people with fragile immune systems, such as AIDS or chemotherapy patients.

Symptoms of Guttate psoriasis are the red tear-shaped spots that really itch and may be covered with flaky scales. A patient may need a skin biopsy to confirm the diagnosis, or if the patient has recently had a sore throat, this may be enough information to diagnose Guttate psoriasis.

Successful treatment of this type of psoriasis is to prevent other infections. The physician may give you antibiotics, cortisone cream to stop the itching, some dandruff shampoo, lotions with coal tar, prescriptions with vitamins D and A, also certain types of moisturizers. If your Guttate psoriasis is really severe, your Doctor may recommend cyclosporine or methotrexate. Sunlight is also a recommended treatment for the milder cases, but it is important not to get sun burned

The prognosis for Guttate psoriasis is promising and often disappears completely after treatment, but sometimes it reappears, often becomes chronic, and occasionally gets more severe. However, most people who have this condition consider it only to be a mild inconvenience when they follow the health regiment that their health care provider recommends.

The key to getting rid of your Guttate psoriasis or Guttate psoriasis Treatment Cure and keeping it under control is quick treatment and following your Doctors treatment. Don’t feel that you are alone in your ordeal with psoriasis; many people are treated for this ailment every year.

Psoriasis Topical Treatment – Topical Cream For Psoriasis

Posted on February 6th, 2010

Psoriasis is a chronic disease that mainly affects the patient’s skin. This disease typically causes red, scaly patches to appear on the skin, and these areas can be extremely itchy and painful. These patches are caused by an over-accumulation of skin, and most commonly appear on the elbows, knees, scalp, hands, and feet. Psoriasis can vary in intensity, ranging from very mild to severe. Here we will loot at the Psoriasis Topical Treatment.

-- Sponsored Links --

The severity of this disease is determined by the body surface affected, reaction to treatment, and how the patient’s life is affected. To date, researchers do not know the full cause of this disease, although findings have suggested that this disease may be genetic. Psoriasis affects the patient’s quality of life because many feel self-conscious when they are suffering from particularly severe outbreaks.

There are many topical skin treatmentsfor those suffering from the effects of psoriasis. Corticosteroids, or simply steroids, are the most commonly prescribed treatment for this disease. These are prescribed in the form of “

  1. Ointments
  2. Creams
  3. Lotion
  4. Foams

… and work to reduce the inflammation of the affected areas. These medications also work to slow the growth of skin cells, which helps to reduce the formation of patches due to the build-up of these cells. Corticosteroids are used to treat mild to moderate cases of psoriasis, and come in a variety of strengths.

psoriasis topical treatment

The different strengths are used to treat different areas of the body. For example, weaker formulas can be used on the face while stronger formulas work well on the knees and elbows. Each steroid will come with specific directions for how often it should be applied. These medications can also cause side effects, including bruising, dilated blood vessels, and thinning of the skin. Corticosteroids are usually recommended for short term use, as the body can become immune to their effects over a prolonged period of time.

Another topical treatment for psoriasis is a Vitamin D ointment or cream. Vitamin D is successful at treating the symptoms of this disease because, like steroids, it slows the growth of the patient’s skin cells. This helps to reduce the appearance of patches caused by skin cell build-up. Vitamin D creams can be used for a prolonged period of time, and it is safer to use than corticosteroids. These creams will also come with specific application instructions, and it is important that the directions are followed exactly as stated. If applied to unaffected areas of the skin, Vitamin D skin treatments could cause pain and inflammation.

Psoriasis UVB Treatment – UVB Phototherapy Psoriasis

Posted on February 6th, 2010

UVB treatment is a phototherapy in which the skin is exposed repeatedly to ultraviolet light by a doctor or at home. UVB stands for ultraviolet light B. UVB is a short wavelength that is present in sunlight, along with UVA and UVC, and is being used as a valuable treatment for psoriasis. UVB phototherapy comes in two forms; broadband and narrowband. The UVB treatment is usually used for those with mild to moderate psoriasis.

Broadband UVB is less effective than narrowband UVB, but both are less effective than a PUVA treatment. However, PUVA is less convenient than UVB treatments and the UVB treatment is effective in many cases. Narrowband UVB is more effective than brodband UVB, but it tends to have more severe side effects such as longer-lasting burns.

psoriasis uvb treatment

With UVB phototherapy, skin is exposed to an artificial UVB light source for a preset amount of time regularly, and can be done either at a medical professional’s office or in your own home. The repeated exposure pierces the epidermis and retards the growth of the psoriasis-affected skin cells. It is important for light therapy to be consistent in order for it to be effective.

After the UVB treatment has improved the psoriasis skin, the maintenance treatments are generally about once a week. The first several treatments may inflame the psoriasis rather than improving the condition. UVB phototherapy may also cause a reddening and itching irritation to the skin and the amount of exposure may need adjustment depending upon the skin’s reaction.

When treating psoriasis with UVB treatment at home, the therapy generally begins at a clinic and then the light box may be used in the home. The light boxes need to be prescribed by a health care professional, and should be monitored by the health care professional even when being used at home. Check with your insurance company, as the equipment needed for UVP home phototherapy may be covered. Both broadband and narrow-band light boxes are available for home use, but because this is a medical treatment and has potential side effects, the boxes are not available without a doctor’s prescription.

Psoriasis Scalp Treatment – Medicated Shampoos to Prescription Medications

Posted on February 5th, 2010

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition in which patches of skin remain red and irritated, eventually becoming flaky and sometimes bleeding. About half of the individuals who suffer from psoriasis experience breakouts on the scalp and require some form of effective psoriasis scalp treatment. Although there is no one main cause for psoriasis to develop, stress, poor diet, changes in the weather and family history can help to trigger an outbreak.

Symptoms of scalp psoriasis include the development of plaques of red, scaly skin, not only directly on the scalp but sometimes extending onto the face and around the back of the ears and the neckline.

Those who suffer scalp psoriasis often find it impossible to wear dark clothing as their skin flakes off in dandruff-like scales, a great cause of embarrassment. In addition, scalp psoriasis can be painful when combing or brushing the hair and usually causes itching and discomfort. Many people with scalp psoriasis are also afraid of losing their hair, but despite the discomfort scalp psoriasis causes, hair loss is normally not an aftermath.

Psoriasis Scalp Treatment Ranges from Medicated Shampoos to Prescription Medications

psoriasis scalp treatment

When dealing with psoriasis scalp treatment, it is important to avoid rubbing or scraping the skin as this will only aggravate the inflammation. The first best psoriasis scalp treatment is the use of specially formulated medicated shampoos containing either coal tar or ketaconazole. It is important to use a formula created for psoriasis occuring on the scalp rather than a general product for psoriasis occuring elsewhere on the body. For very thick patches of inflamed skin, applying a solution of coconut oil mixed with 10% salicylic acid or 20% urea cream, then covering in plastic overnight to allow the scales to soften, followed by the specially formulated shampoo, proves effective.

Exposing the scalp to natural sunlight or UV light is recognized as an effective natural psoriasis scalp treatment. Antihistimines obtained over the counter from the drugstore can also help reduce the inflammation.

For very severe cases of scalp psoriasis, an appointment with a dermatologist is essential in order to obtain scalp psoriasis treatment including prescription foams, oils and shampoos, along with systemic drugs that are taken internally to remedy the outbreak rather than topically applied over the infected areas of scalp.

Plaque Psoriasis Treatment

Posted on February 5th, 2010

Psoriasis is an inflammatory disorder. The most common form of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis, which is characterized by red, thick and scaly skin. The condition is not contagious and treatment is usually effective in clearing plaques.

Topical treatments for Plaque Psoriasis

  • Coal tar – this thick oil, has proven effective in reducing scales, itching and inflammation. Coal tar is probably the oldest known treatment for psoriasis.
  • Vitamin D analogues – these are also effective in clearing plaque psoriasis. Common forms of these include calcipotriol, calcitriol and tacalcitrol. These creams are known to slow down the production of skin cells, as a result of the vitamin D in them.

  • Dithranol- this treatment is generally used under hospital supervision on a short-term basis. While very effective in keeping psoriasis under control, dithranol is known to stain everything, even the skin. To reduce the risk of staining, it is normally applied to the skin for a few minutes and then washed.

  • Sunlight – moderate exposure to sunlight on a daily basis can improve symptoms. Caution should be taken when utilizing this method, as over exposure to the sun may cause the condition to worsen.
  • Psoralean plus ultraviolet A – this treatment is generally used in severe cases of psoriasis, and is not recommended for long-term use. To make the skin more sensitive to light, the patient is required to take a psoralean tablet. The skin is then deeply penetrated by exposure to Ultraviolet A light.

  • UVB phototherapy – this treatment uses Ultraviolet B light, and is done under the supervision of a dermatologist in a hospital. It is effective in treating plaque psoriasis that has not responded to topical treatments. Treatments may last up to 30 sessions.

Plaque Psoriasis Treatment Medication

  • Acitretin – this oral medication is used in the treatment of severe psoriasis. The drug is another effective method in reducing the production of skin cells.
  • Methotrexate – this medicine is useful in treating extensive plaque psoriasis. Methotrexate reduces the production of skin cells and suppresses inflammation.
  • Ciclosporin – this medicine suppresses the immune system and has proven effective in treating all types of psoriasis.

Nail Psoriasis Treatment Cure

Posted on February 5th, 2010

Psoriasis is a skin disease that affects many people. It is characterized by red, inflamed patches of skin on the body. These patches can be very itchy and painful, and usually affect the elbows, knees, hands, feet, and face. This disease can also affect a person’s finger nails and toe nails. When this happens, the disease is called psoriatic nail dystrophy.

About 25 to 50 percent of patients suffering from psoriasis experience nail psoriasis. Although scientists have not determined the cause of nail psoriasis, studies have shown that the disease is usually genetic. If a patient’s mother or father suffer from psoriasis, the patient is much more likely to develop this disease as well. Many people who suffer from this disease also suffer from a decrease in their quality of life because they are embarrassed and self-conscientious, especially when suffering from a particularly severe breakout.

Nail Psoriasis Treatment

Currently, there is no cure for nail psoriasis. The goal of any treatment for this disease is aimed towards improving the appearance of the affected person’s nails, thus improving their self-confidence. Many people with this ailment discover that their nail has loosened. If this has happened, it is important to trim the nail back to where it is still attached to the skin. This helps any medication to work better. Patients who perform nail care at home must always be sure to be very gentle when handling their nails as rough treatment can lead to severe psoriasis breakouts.

As mentioned above, a patient’s doctor may prescribe medication to help treat the symptoms of nail psoriasis. Most of these treatments will come in the form of an ointment or cream. These include steroid creams, creams containing Vitamin D, and antifungal creams. Usually, these treatments will need to be rubbed on and around the nail multiple times per day.

These medications may not be effective in all cases, as the actual nail presents a barrier to the skin underneath. It is sometimes difficult for the prescribed medication to reach the skin because of this. In such cases, a medical professional will often resort to injecting the necessary medication under the nail so that it can work properly.

In some cases, none of the above treatments are effective in treating nail psoriasis. In these cases, the patient’s nails often must be surgically removed. During this procedure, the nail area is numbed using a local anesthetic and the nails are removed. Removing the affected nails will cause the symptoms of nail psoriasis to dissipate.

Find Relief With Effective Herbal Treatment for Psoriasis

Posted on February 5th, 2010

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition in which patches of the body’s skin are constantly inflamed. Symptoms include patches of red, scaly skin that ultimately turn silvery white and sometimes lead to bleeding and crusting of the affected area. Let us find relief with effective herbal treatment for psoriasis.

Although research has uncovered no definitive cause for psoriasis, stress, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and ongoing injury to the skin can trigger an outbreak. Heredity also plays a factor in whether or not a person is likely to develop psoriasis, as are changes in the seasons. Individuals whose skin is normally thin and dry tend to be more susceptible to developing psoriasis.

Homeopathic Psoriasis Treatment

Posted on February 5th, 2010

When it comes to traits that are handed down through our gene pool we never get to pick and choose which trait we would like. Psoriasis is just one of those ugly genetic factors that are passed down through the blood line.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that can produce scales or red bumps to appear on different areas of the skin and it isn’t picky about which part. Psoriasis can appear anywhere on the body from the scalp to the toenail. Some sufferers of the chronic disease will not get any signs at all of the psoriasis except for the itching and pain associated with it. Other sufferers of psoriasis are hit from the start with blisters, itching, burning and scaly red bumps.

While most regular doctors will prescribe a treatment of cortisone, cortisone shots and other man made medications, the better and healthier way to go is with a homeopathic treatment.

While the causes of psoriasis differ from internal, genetics to allergies and stress the end result of clear, non-irritated skin is what a homeopathic psoriasis treatment goals for.

homeopathic psoriasis treatment

There are many herbs out there that can help with your homeopathic psoriasis treatment. Different foods can also lend in the treatment. Plantains are one of the better foods that can help with psoriasis. Now you can eat the plantain and it would be very beneficial for you but making an ointment from it will help the psoriasis and the itching at the same time. Anyone can make a simple ointment to help with psoriasis by mixing together olive oil, fresh plantain and a little bit of beeswax.

The measurements do not need to be precise in this, start out with a couple of tablespoons of each item and mix until you have an ointment that is almost in a paste form. If you have psoriasis on your scalp you will want to rub the ointment that you just made into your psoriasis before going to bed and wash with a very light shampoo in the morning. If the psoriasis is on various parts of your body you can use your homeopathic treatment that you made just as you would a lotion and can apply as many times as needed throughout the day.

How Common Is Psoriasis?

Posted on January 30th, 2010

How Common Is Psoriasis? – Answer 1

Somewhere in the range of 2-4% of the world population is the figure usually given for number of Psoriasis patients. The Brit Psoriasis Association says 2-3 % of the British population suffers from Psoriasis.

May not sound like much but that 2-3% means about 7 million people here in the US alone.

Don’t know if my GP’s trying to tell me something, but 6 months ago, I went to him with ‘spots’ that started in the armpits and went down the inside of my arms and the sides of my torso. He said “all I seem to be seeing at the moment is non-specific skin conditions” (or words to that effect).

Psoriasis Cure
Psoriasis Treatment

Well in fairness to him, he is a GP and that’s not a very usual pattern for Psoriasis to begin to appear like that -much more common to begin on the scalp or elbow/knee joints. So what he said isn’t really unreasonable.

Some weeks later, dermo say “me see you in 5 months” Me wonder “surely my GP must have heard of something called a NHS waiting-list, why didn’t he work on the assumption that I’ve got psoriasis, after all – he is my doctor (duh !)”

Might not have known it and he did try what sounds like a topical steroid which is a pretty common thing to try for Psoriasis along with other types of skin irritations.

Anyway, upshot – I write GP (alleged) to say “please assume I have psoriasis, me want prescription – this thing ain’t stopping for nobody”. Me now picking up prescription (chemists) tomorrow morning. Now maybe I’m just being sensitive, but I’m having such a hard time trying to delude myself that he’s never seen a case of psoriasis before. I know it’s probably just paranoia getting the better of me – and he must see a million different kinds of related things – but even then…… . Someone please tell me to get a grip of myself and stop being so paranoid. And the likelihood of a cure.

Psoriasis Treatments
Psorisis Cure
Psorisis Treatment

The thing is that there are other things that can look similar, especially to a non-specialist and as I said above, yours didn’t appear in a usual pattern for P. Not impossible, just not usual. And he did give you something that sounds like the topical steroid (couldn’t find daktorcote anywhere BTW. sure about that name?) that would be a common initial approach for P and a number of similar looking things.

So yeah, it’s really frustrating but it doesn’t sound like conspiracy theory territory.

How Common Is Psoriasis? – Answer 2

I personally have no faith in GP’s knowledge of psoriasis, my GP spent a year treating me for psoriasis under the false assumption that it was a yeast infection that had somehow spread to my scalp in addition to my private parts.

I’ve seen a LOT of dermatologists, I usually “dump” the ones that look/talk/act like they’re clueless about it. I’m really not afraid of dermatologist-jumping, suggest that you find a better dermatologist (I usually dump the ones that look at my psoriasis with disgust.)

I’d really suggest signing up to receive the NPF bulletins. I’ve really learnt a lot from them, now I go to my dermatologist and tell her exactly which medicines I need!!
